Who owns the non-Catholic Cemetery?

The Non-Catholic Cemetery is private and is the responsibility of a Committee formed by 14 Embassies in Rome which have nationals buried in the Cemetery. The Embassies are:

Australia - Canada - Denmark – Federal Republic of Germany - Finland - Greece – Netherlands- Norway – Russian Federation – South Africa – Sweden – Switzerland – United Kingdom – United States of America

 

How is the non-Catholic Cemetery funded?

The Cemetery is entirely self-supporting financially; owners of plots make an annual maintenance payment and the Cemetery also relies on private and public contributions and grants to pay for essential conservation and maintenance work. Is it still possible to be buried in the Cemetery?

Yes, the cemetery is still active; burials are permitted both in existing family graves and in new small plots for cinerary urns.

Who can be buried in the Non-Catholic Cemetery?

According to the Cemetery regulations, non-Catholic, non-Italian nationals have the right to be buried there. They must be resident in or near Rome, or have died in Rome.

Can an Italian or a Catholic be buried in the cemetery?

Yes, but only if he/she is the partner, spouse or child of a person already buried at the Cemetery.

How does one obtain a plot at the Non-Catholic Cemetery?

It is necessary to contact the Cemetery administration after a death occurs to verify eligibility and availability of a suitable location. The Cemetery will need to see the passport of the deceased person.

 

Is it possible to obtain a plot in advance?

It is possible only for people aged 75 or more or for those who are in the last stages of a terminal illness.

 

Is it possible to film in, or to take photographs of, the Cemetery?

Yes, for private purposes only. For commercial films, publications etc permission must be sought from the Cemetery administration and rights agreed, including fees.

 

Is it possible to get into the Pyramid from the Cemetery?

No, the entrance is from Piazzale Ostiense and the Pyramid is open to the public every second and fourth Saturday in the month.

 

Can the cemetery chapel be used to celebrate a religious or secular ceremony other than a funeral?
